There is a popular saying in making money online circles which is "the money is in the list". This is because by having prospects details you can send them items of value to build your relationship with them and then promote your goods and services.

The list is important for a number of reasons. If you own a business you want a way to keep in touch and remind potential clients of your services. If you are promoting of selling a product you will want to follow-up on with those who are interested in buying. In general people don't buy the first time they come across something so you want to ensure you have their details for future promotions. In order to build a list the following simple strategy can be employed.

1) Find something of value you can give away for free. Within your business are or niche, you must find something of value to give away to potential prospects. This is because you will give something away in exchange for the details of the prospect. They will then go onto your list. This is not as hard as it seems. Think of something that the person might be looking for. This step is really important otherwise they will go elsewhere; after all you would probably go elsewhere if the giveaway was no good. You can even simply refer the person to a video or an online article which is relevant to your niche; ezinearticles being a great source here.

2) Find an Autoresponder. An autoresponder is a piece of software that allows you to build your list and send emails to it. There are plenty of autoresponders to choose from like Aweber or Getresponse. The autoresponder will allow you to

a. Create an 'Optin-Form': This is a web form that you can embed in a lead capture page (a webpage whose job it is to attract your leads). When a prospect enters their details into the box and submits the form their details pass onto the list.

b. Set up an automated, pre-written sequence of emails which will be mailed to the list. This is the real power of the autoresponder; you have the power to create as many emails as you like. These emails must continue to provide value to your prospects. You will also be able to send broadcasts to your lists too.

3) Create a lead capture page to put you optin-box on. Again this is quite easy to do. If you already have a website you can place the optin box there. Your autoresponder company will provide help here. If you have no webpage just create one. Even with no technical knowledge you could use a site like Weebly which is free and has simple tools to help you.

4) Market the lead capture page. Online marketing itself is a huge subject, way beyond the scope of this article. I'd suggest starting by simply marketing as you would offline; this could include business cards, adverts and spreading the word. Remember to include a link to your lead capture page on your advertising media. For online marketing you could hire an expert or investigate the area yourself. There are organisations that offer training, such as the Six Figure Mentors, which even allow you to earn while you learn.

List building for your business cannot be underestimated. The internet provides a fantastic way to build your list. As a final tip, once a prospect become a buyer move them off the prospect list onto a "buyer" list. They are now part of the trusted community and don't need to be sent prospect emails any more.
